GIS stands for geographic (or geospatial) information systems and is a powerful technological tool which can be used for studying a host of environmental and social problems. The number of applications for which it can be used are tremendous and are growing at a rapid pace. The technology includes many web-based applications (e.g., mapquest and terraserver) and is becoming a platform for interactive web-based exploration and education as well. Jack Dangermond, President of ESRI (makers of leading GIS software) will be presenting a lecture entitled "GIS Vision and Enabling Technology" on Thursday, March 8 at 1:30 in Fiedler Auditorium. I would encourage anyone with even a passive interest to attend.
